Agenda Items

Minutes from the October 9, 2024 meeting were reviewed. Motion was made to approve minutes as written, seconded, approved unanimously.

The Digital Citizenship Plan was discussed. The council was shown a video from CSD regarding digital citizenship.

  • Filtering systems and supervision practices in the school.

Teachers use LanSchool, a system that allows teachers to see what students are doing on their Chromebooks during class time. Teachers also wander the classroom. Hillcrest has implemented a cell phone policy in the classroom using brown bags. Parents can add filters by going to tcp.canyonsdistrict.org More information will be added to the newsletter.

  • Efforts to help students desire to be good digital citizens.

Digital Citizenship week is celebrated with announcements and discussions in classes. There are three lessons taught in students APP class throughout the year.

  • Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship information to parents.

Information to parents is shared in the monthly newsletter and parent square. Discussion was made for additionally having information available at parent/teacher conferences. Brenda would like to inform parents about social media platforms and AI. CSD offers Digital Citizenship training on a monthly basis for parents, students, and employees. For information go to canyonsdistrict.org/familyconnections

  • Motion was made to approve the Digital Citizenship plan, seconded, approved unanimously.

The School Safety Plan was discussed.

  • Construction in the field/East parking lot will begin on November 18th. An egress will be added to keep students safe. Discussion of possibly adding a sidewalk in the Southeast corner since they are already doing the construction in the parking lot. Andrew will update the emergency evacuation plans as students cannot gather in the construction zone. If students need to be evacuated from the property, the meeting place is at the white church on the corner of 700 E. 7500 S.
  • Crisis Go software has the potential to be a powerful communication tool during a crisis or emergency. It will allow teachers and administration to keep in communication as well as alert authorities if needed. It has an automatic announcement that will give instructions according to the alert. Piloted in other schools in the district, it is now being set up at Hillcrest.
  • Utah State Legislature passed a bill requiring all schools to have armed security personnel. A guardian is an employee who volunteers to be that personnel when an SRO is unavailable. Guardians will have a concealed weapons permit and be willing to prevent or abate an active threat. CSD is actively working on a district plan and is in the process of helping schools find their guardian(s).
  • Motion to approve the School Safety plan, seconded, approved unanimously.

MAP Growth Testing.

  • A new software, reading and math test given to 9th and 10th grade students. Previous company for RI and MI tests decided to stop supporting the software.
  • The first test showed lower scores than normal. We are unsure if the test outcome was due to it being new, the tests were too long, or students had an unlimited time to complete them. Brenda is hoping to retest the students in December.
  • We will revisit this agenda item in January.

PTSA Update

  • Looking for new members. Making a plan to invite Spanish speakers and have interpreters at the meetings. They will set up tables at the next Spanish event.
  • Last week they held a Watch Dog night. Thirty parents attended and ten have signed up to come to the school. The first one will be this Friday.
  • The next fundraiser event will be on November 19th at Panda Express in Ft Union.

Other Topics

  • New policy to attend APP home room every Monday. At the beginning of 2nd quarter all students started attending APP every Monday morning with their assigned APP teacher. The students are not allowed to go to another APP class. The intent is to have a check & connect with their teacher. Teachers will discuss student’s grades and missing assignments, hopefully making APP more productive. Too many students have been using APP as free time where they go to other APP classes to hang with friends or skip the class entirely. Brenda is trying to get the students and teachers to remember the Hillcrest Way which is Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships.
  • Savage Company is offering to help Hillcrest with funding for Dreamworks University. A program designed to help tier 2 students. The program is still in the works but could use CTE pathways to help students find success in their individual education path through high school into college and adulthood.

Motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded, approved unanimously.

Next Meeting – Wednesday, December 11, 2024 @ 5:00 p.m.
