School Community Council—Hillcrest High School

May 13, 2020: Members conducted this meeting online using Webex.

Meeting Notes:

  • Brant Thomsen opened the meeting.
  • Graduation
    • The school will be providing signs for every graduate
    • Graduating students will be given a Hillcrest thumb drive with graduation information
    • Graduation will be practiced with a small group to work out details
    • Principal will be singing something (as is tradition), and some type of video ceremony will be available
    • Drive-thru graduation ceremony on the football field will be live-streamed and recorded
      • Minivans will be allowed. Weight limit is 5,000 pounds.
    • Mont Millerberg will be recording a message on the football field to include in the graduation message.
  • Construction Update
    • Empty school has helped with construction, due to not having to worry about student safety.
    • That may have helped them by a week. Currently still about 3 months behind schedule.
  • Discussion about communication from school
    • Stacey: Information from administration has been very clear.
    • Information is available on the school webpage if someone missed out on emails.
  • School to open in fall?
    • If state is in yellow phase, schools may allow for students to attend.
    • Already planning to do at least some online learning.
    • Leavitt: “School will not be normal, even in August.”
    • District is making plans to recommend to the Board.
  • Grading Deadline
    • Teacher deadline for new assignments is May 15.
    • Students have almost 8 days to get in work done.
    • Administration is going to send out a clarifying email later this week.
    • AP and IB classes do have an exception to the relaxed grading deadline.
    • Staff is being encouraged to be overly fair in grading.
  • 2020-2021 Class Scheduling
    • Arena scheduling will be opened on May 18-26.
    • Administration will send out an announcement about it.
  • Online Class Considerations
    • Stacey: What about classes that students want to take again because they couldn’t do it hands on?  For example, small engine maintenance
      • Nicole: Students can take the class again as an elective.
      • There is a risk that fall semester could have the same issue.
    • Trust Land Plan and TSSA
      • Trust Land Plan and TSSA were approved.
      • Should be available online shortly.
    • Miscellaneous
      • Administration will send out a link to that video that includes Kate Timmerman’s message to graduating seniors.
