Agenda Items

  1. Minutes from the January 8, 2025 meeting were reviewed. Motion was made to approve minutes as written, seconded, approved unanimously.
  2. APP Period
  • APP gives teachers a chance to build relationships with students as well as check on grades and missing assignments. It also gives students time to work on assignments, be it current or missing. APP 2nd quarter attendance was at 90%.
  • The new policy to attend APP home room every Monday was reviewed at the school’s BLT team meeting. There is still work to be done on the curriculum for the home room day. More education needs to be done to help students and parents understand how APP can benefit the students.
  • The BLT team will need time to work on the curriculum. We will return to this agenda item next year.

3. Impact from Immigration Policies

  • Canyons School District sent out a statement about the policy and ICE. The statement was appreciated.
  • There are students with a real fear of what could happen to them or their families. The school wants to make sure all students feel safe at school. ICE would not be allowed to take a student without a discussion with administration and the district legal team. The district does not keep immigration information on students or their family.
  • The school can not give out immigration help or information at this time. However, they can continue to offer emotional support as well as basic need items.

4. TSSP Plan

  • Looking at new ways to collect data, not sure that CFA’s are accurate. Some schools are using other software such as Aspire. The BLT team will meet next Friday to discuss options.
  • There are approximately 700 freshmen coming in next year. There is still a need to use money for mentors, social work, and community school facilitator. Legislature is talking about giving a lump sum amount to disperse over three years, eliminating the $50 registration fee.
  • The previous TSSP plan included goals for attendance, graduation and school climate. Most of the goals will continue this year.
  • Brenda will send out the TSSP Plan for review. The SCC will vote and sign off on the plan at the March meeting.

5. School Community Survey

  • Different surveys have been given over the years. Casey surveys were given previously but we’re not sure that they will be using them this year. The students will be taking the Sharp survey this month in their English class. Parents can opt their students out of the survey. Parents are also sent surveys to complete. The seniors will be taking a survey about their high school experience.
  • Administrators write their goals around the results of the surveys. Surveys do not always give a complete outlook as not everyone completes them.
  • Not all parents know about what happens in the schools, especially non English speaking parents. We would like to try to get more parents involved in the school. We would like to invite parents to join the SCC and PTA meetings, letting them know that interpreters are available.
  • Brenda will find a way to post survey results.

6. PTSA Update

  • Parent teacher conference dinner on Tuesday will be provided by the PTSA. Parent teacher conference will be by Zoom appointments on Monday, February 24th and in person on Tuesday, February 25th.
  • Raising Canes spirit night will be on Wednesday, February 26th.

7. Other

  • There have been two student deaths in the past month. One was a sophomore and one a senior. There has been extra mental health support from the district and the state to help with student and staff emotional health. On March 5th there will be a training on grief that a few staff members will attend. The school would like to offer grief groups. There are many options of support in the school by social workers, psychologists, and an outside company called Hopeful Beginnings.
  • Latino’s in Action have a new teacher. The group is struggling a bit as the new teacher is learning the curriculum. There is a class and a club, they will work on having the two groups work together instead of separately.
  • Due to Hillcrest Cultural Night on March 12th, it was proposed that we move our next meeting to March 19th. A motion was made to approve the meeting date to March 19th, seconded, approved unanimously.

Motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded, approved unanimously.

Next Meeting – Wednesday, March 19th @ 5:00 p.m.
