Weekly Parent Corner: Talking About Vaping
As part of our new campaign, “Clear the Air, Huskies,” to support families in preventing teen vaping, we’ll be sharing brief weekly resources from the How to Start a Conversation With Your Child About Vaping Guide. Each section will give parents simple, approachable tools to help them talk with their teens and stay informed.
Week 3 – If Your Teen Is Already Vaping
This week’s focus is on what to do if you find out your teen is vaping. The most important message: this doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent or that your relationship is ruined. It’s a signal that your child is coping with something, stress, pressure to fit in, or big emotions, and that they need your support as well as clear limits.
- Look beyond the behavior: gently ask what they like or “get” from vaping (stress relief, social acceptance, boredom, etc.).
- Work with them to find healthier substitutes, sports, hobbies, relaxation tools, or simply more one‑on‑one time with you.
- Set calm, firm boundaries that vaping isn’t allowed at home, and explain why, focusing on health and their future goals rather than shame.
- Help them quit. Quitting isn’t easy, but it is possible. Visit mylifemyquit.org or text “Start my quit” to 36072 to start your quit. Visit “How To Help Your Teen Quit” for tips.
Parent Conversation Starter: “If you’re ever using vaping to deal with stress or to fit in, I want to understand what’s going on and figure out some healthier options together. I’m on your team.”
