Weekly Parent Corner: Talking About Vaping

As part of our new campaign, “Clear the Air, Huskies,” to support families in preventing teen vaping, we’ll be sharing brief weekly resources from the How to Start a Conversation With Your Child About Vaping Guide. Each section will give parents simple, approachable tools to help them talk with their teens and stay informed.

Week 5 – Helping Teens Handle Peer Pressure

This week focuses on one of the most common reasons teens try vaping: pressure to fit in. Many students are offered a vape by friends or see others using it and feel uncomfortable saying no, even if they are not interested themselves. Parents can help by normalizing this pressure and giving teens simple tools to handle it calmly.

Peer pressure is a normal part of adolescence and does not mean your teen is weak or making bad choices. Teens feel more confident when they have already thought through what they might say in an uncomfortable moment. Saying no does not need to be dramatic or confrontational. Simple and casual responses are often the most effective.

Examples teens might use include:

  • “It’s just not my thing.”
  • “I’m good, thanks.”
  • “I don’t want that messing with my goals.”
  • Or simply, “No.”

Parent Conversation Starter: “If someone offered you a vape, what do you think would be the hardest part. Saying no, feeling awkward, or worrying about what they’d think?”
