Weekly Parent Corner: Talking About Vaping
As part of our new campaign, “Clear the Air, Huskies,” to support families in preventing teen vaping, we’ll be sharing brief weekly resources from the How to Start a Conversation With Your Child About Vaping Guide. Each section will give parents simple, approachable tools to help them talk with their teens and stay informed.
Week 4 – Building the Relationship That Makes Talks Easier
This week is less about vaping itself and more about the relationship that makes any tough conversation go better. When teens feel respected, understood, and trusted, they’re more likely to listen and open up about vaping and everything else.
A strong relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and really trying to understand who your teen is, what they want, and what they care about.
Small, consistent gestures matter: checking in regularly, spending even a little one‑on‑one time (a short walk, a quick drive, a snack run), and noticing their efforts, not just their achievements.
Saying “I care about you” out loud and being there when they’ve had a rough day helps them feel safe coming to you when they’re pressured to vape or are curious about it.
Digital Citizenship Monthly Message
Being informed is more than knowing facts — it’s about helping young people learn to question, analyze, and make sense of the information they encounter every day. In a world where news, opinions, algorithms, and misinformation are everywhere, our kids need the skills to pause, think, and investigate before deciding what to trust. When children learn how to verify sources, recognize bias, and cross-check claims, they’re not just building academic skills — they’re developing the habits they need to stay safe online and grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens.
This week, we’re highlighting the Informed skill from Common Sense Education’s Digital Citizenship curriculum. At home, you can support this by talking with your child about what they see online, asking questions together, and modeling how to slow down and check whether information is trustworthy.
Because when children learn to be informed, they become safer, smarter, and more empowered citizens. https://cnyns.org/4j4KBePLinks to an external site.
