2. Hillcrest Anti-Vaping Campaign — Presentation & Discussion

Assistant Principal Andrew Yawn presented the school’s comprehensive anti-vaping initiative. The plan responds to recent survey data indicating decreased student feelings of safety and a rise in vape-related incidents.

  • Key Data & Concerns
    •  27 vaping-related incidents documented this year (nicotine and THC).
    • Majority occurred in restrooms.
    • Three students required EMT assistance after high-potency THC exposure – not this school year
  • Plan Overview, “Clear the Air Huskies”
    • The plan consists of 8 pillars: Community Partnerships, Policy Updates, Education & Awareness, Supervision & Hall-Pass Reform, Detectors & Environment, Parent Communication, Leadership, Stakeholder-Driven Implementation: Regular updates to SCC; student input through the Student Leadership Academy; community feedback.
  • Discussion Highlights
      • Members recommended defining what constitutes a “vape incident” in the formal written plan.
      • Interest in offering cessation classes onsite to reduce barriers for families.
      • Suggestion for clearer parent communication regarding discipline, supports, and resources.
      • SCC requested quarterly updates once implementation begins (likely by end of 3rd quarter).
      • Vape detectors are expected to be recalibrated pending support from the manufacturer.
      • Members supported the plan to be available on the Hillcrest website for parents to access.

Motion: Approve the Anti-Vaping Plan with the suggested addition clarifying definitions of “incidents.”

Vote: Motion made and seconded; approved unanimously.

  • Monthly parent messaging through the Husky newsletter
  • Ongoing emphasis on digital balance rather than “screen time totals.”

  • Filtering has strengthened this year
