Meeting Notes:

  • Brant Thomsen opened the meeting
  • Agenda Item: TSSP and Land Trust Plans
    • Brant asked if there were any questions or concerns with the TSSP or Land Trust Funds plans. No questions were raised.
    • Brant made a motion that a vote be taken to approve the TSSP and Land Trust plans.
      • Julie Cluff seconded the motion.
      • The vote was held and was unanimous to approve the TSSP and Land Trust Plan for 2021-2022.
    • Agenda Item: COVID updates
      • Mr. Leavitt said we are now using a Test and Stay policy.
        • We will use this for Prom. About 400 kids have signed up. Students wishing to attend will be tested the day before.
        • We are waiting to see what protocol changes may be coming from the state as we moved forward with our plans.
      • Mont Millerberg noted that buildings will still have a mask requirement, since our buildings are government-owned buildings.
      • Mont Millerberg said that some schools are beginning to request a more normal graduation. We may be seeing more changes in graduation plans.
        • Mr. Leavitt noted that he was interviewed by KSL. He told them about our plan to hold graduation in the auditorium using small groups of students
        • Students will be given a chance to walk through the school one last time before things are torn down this summer.
        • If SCC members would like something different, they should email Mr. Leavitt. We may need to solidify grad plans very soon.
        • Mont Millerberg said that last year was memorable according to many students. Many thought the graduation was actually better than standard graduation in prior years.
      • Mont Millerberg noted that the school district will be giving the last vaccinations this week for teachers and staff. This was a very smooth process.
        • Mr. Leavitt asked if SCC members were able to be vaccinated.
          • SCC members responded that they were not able to get the vaccine. They were turned away.
        • Mont Millerberg also noted that Test and Stay has been very good for the district. Canyons District has pushed the percentages to 2%, instead of 1%.
          • Mr. Leavitt noted that we probably will not need to close again because of the Test and Stay policy. This will save the confusion of shutting down and reopening, although Hillcrest only closed once around Thanksgiving.
        • Agenda Item: School Fees
          • Brant suggested that we have already discussed the graduation plans, so we can move on to school fees. Are there any concerns about the new fee schedule? It will include a $40.00 Chromebook charge.
            • No concerns were brought forward.
          • Agenda Item: Graduation Plans
            • Karen Conder suggested that we return to graduation night. She asked about PTSA hosting a movie night on the football field after the senior dinner dance. Can we have food on the football field?
              • Leavitt responded that we can have food on the field.
              • The movie night sounds fun for seniors
              • Karen Conder asked Suzanne Riches if the library has a movie site license allowing for this movie event. Suzanne Riches responded that we do have a license and she would check to see if the site license will cover an event like this, emailing Karen the information.
            • Stacey Timmerman asked if seniors would be allowed to keep Chromebooks after graduation.
              •
              • Leavitt responded that we will not be bringing the Chromebooks in. Students will keep them for the next year, or seniors will be allowed to keep them.
              • Suzanne Riches said that we will need to get the Senior Chromebooks off the system. They will need to be checked in so that we can track inventory. However, they can then be given back to the seniors.
              • Stacey Timmerman noted that her family’s Chromebooks from their Middle School have had problems with keyboard keys coming loose, etc.
                • Leavitt responded that Hillcrest has not had a problem maintaining its Chromebooks.
              • Mont Millerberg added that district Chromebooks come loaded with software that filters and controls Internet browsing. They will continue to filter during the summer or as seniors take them.
            • Agenda Item: Construction Updates
              • SCC was given a tour of the new building prior to the meeting. Mr. Leavitt noted that everything is on schedule.
            • Other Items
              • Brant Thomsen said that the next meeting will be April 14, 2021.
              • Mont Millerberg asked for the groups thoughts on the current Friday schedule. Discussion ensued about the current school schedule with Fridays as an online day for students. SCC members were in favor of keeping the schedule as it is.
                • We have had a lot of change this year. There are only 6 Fridays left, so keeping thing as they are makes sense.
                • Parents have found that kids have been able to stay current on homework, etc. with Friday time to work.
                • This year has been very difficult for teachers. The Friday preparation time has been very helpful.
                • Students have been able to connect with teachers and get help on Friday. Mr. Leavitt said he has been impressed with how much time teachers are spending with students on Friday.
                • Millerberg suggested that some of the response to this is based on age groups. Elementary parents are not as positive about the Friday schedules as secondary parents.
                • Mont Millerberg said that 95% of the feedback requested about the schedule is coming from teachers. The student advisory board was also supportive.
                • Leavitt said that we should keep the schedule to help those students who are not on-track to graduate. Many more online kids are struggling.
                • The vote will be held by the board at the next scheduled meeting to determine the Friday schedule moving forward.
              • Millerberg also said that there is current discussion about all Canyons Schools moving to a late start next year.
                • Leavitt said that this will facilitate PLC’s and teacher collaborative planning.
                • Suzanne Riches noted the positive force that PLC’s have been at Hillcrest—programming and tightening up instruction.
                • Next year, Hillcrest will begin at 7:45 AM and end at 2:20 with board approval.
                • Julie Cluff asked about an early out instead of a late start. A late start may be harder for parents.
              • Mont Millerberg said that he has been amazed at how resilient classroom teachers have been as well as parents who have had to adjust to the new system.
              • Millerberg also asked SCC members to consider running for the Board of Education in 2024. He is not planning to run for reelection.
                • He noted that 16 school board races occurred in Salt Lake County last year, 11 were unopposed.
                • So, if members have interest, they should act.
              • Brant Thomsen thanked members for the service and suggested that the meeting adjourn. RJ Graham seconded the motion. The council voted and the meeting was adjourned.
