Student Article: The Science Behind Strength: The Dystrophy Education Initiative

Most of us take for granted that our muscles just work. Whether it’s about hitting a PR in the gym, or walking to class leisurely, we are all constantly relying on an “actin-myosin dance” occurring at the cellular level. But what happens when the body’s biological “glue” goes missing?

Let’s talk about Muscular Dystrophy, one of 7,000 rare diseases worldwide. It’s a genetic mutation where a missing protein (Dystrophin) causes muscle fibers to break/tear during basic movement. When this “glue” is absent, acts that should make us stronger like exercise become the root cause of cellular damage.

And, unfortunately, MD is plagued by the Rare Disease Paradox; while MD may only affect a small(er) percent of the population, the collective “rare” community is 300 million strong worldwide.

In this initiative, we aren’t just studying the science; we’re championing the strength of individuals behind the data. Look for posters around the school supporting MD, and reach out to Aahana at asha6516@csddocs.org to learn how to get more involved.

Scholarship Opportunity for Seniors

The Hillcrest High Alumni Association (HHAA) awards scholarships each year to HHS seniors who want to continue their education after graduation. These funds can be used for career and technical education, college, or even for finishing up training at CTEC.

This year, there are two different scholarships available, and applicants may submit for one or both using a single application form:

  • One $3,000 Lorene Mark Scholarship – The Power of Words and Education. This scholarship is named in honor of a longtime Hillcrest Language Arts teacher and will be awarded to a student majoring in Language Arts Education or a student who has been empowered through writing and language skills.
  • HHAA Scholarships – One $5,000 scholarship and several additional scholarships (number and amount of awards to be determined)

The scholarship application can be found on the Hillcrest High Alumni Association website at hillcrestalumni.org, or you can email hillcresthighalumni@gmail.com to request an application. Deadline for applications is April 15, 2026.
