Principal’s Message
Parent APP Pass Access Video
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
As promised in last week’s message, we have provided a short training video for you this week. This video shows parents and guardians how they can access the APP pass so they can see what their students are doing, who they are requesting and where they are going. This can serve as a great tool to help you make sure there is follow through with your student in APP.

Previous Week APP Message:
We hope you had a nice break. The end of first semester is upon us, ending January 14th. Parents, we hope you are checking student grades and attendance through Skyward and Canvas so you have the information needed to support your students. HHS continues to support students through our provided Academic Preparation Period (APP). We want to remind you that APP is graded and students receive 1 full credit per year for APP participation. Students who do not have 90% attendance and participate with good work ethic in APP, as determined by their teacher, may receive a failing grade. During APP, teachers review their grades with students and encourage students who may need extra help to visit those teachers.
During APP, teachers can also use that time to re-teach students key concepts they may be missing to pass class assessments. This help is delivered one-on-one or in small groups. However, unless the student schedules a time with their teacher by creating an electronic hall pass, which schedules this needed time for your students with a specific teacher, they most likely are missing out on this valuable teacher support. Students may also re-take assessments during APP. The HHS school disclosure will not allow a re-take unless students are working with their teacher on missed concepts and show completed leaning tasks. Re-takes are not meant to be a second chance of guessing but rather a tool that students can show teachers they now understand and have learned the concepts. Teachers may also request the student visit them during APP by creating a pass for the student to come to the teacher on a certain day. Some students ignore these passes and do not receive the help they need. I recognize some parents may feel their students are unsupported during APP, as described. However, I feel our teachers are doing good things with their APP students, so if you need help working with a teacher please reach out to the teacher or administration.
HHS will be sending out instructions to parents next week on how parents can have access to their student’s electronic hall pass. This access will assist parents as they help students follow through in APP. We encourage parents to make sure students use the APP electronic hall pass to schedule times with teachers and receive the proper support. Many students have grades that do not require support. We recognize this, but note, that APP is still a valuable time to complete work and study for upcoming assessments. APP should be a time that assists all students.

Sack Lunches and Four Day Break:
Canyons District families: As a reminder, Friday, Jan. 15 is a no-student day, which means students will not be expected to engage in independent learning. Before the school year began, the day was identified on the District’s approved calendar as a professional development and grading day for teachers. As such, schools will not be sending sack meals home with students the preceding Thursday. Canyons schools will remain closed through Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. We hope you enjoy the four-day break, and we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021.
